The Richmond Coliseum

I graduated with my Master's Degree today in the Richmond Coliseum. I had never been in the Coliseum before, and so while this sounds a bit obvious, I was surprised at how big it was. Perhaps the "wow" feeling was increased because instead of sitting in the seats I was sitting on the main floor looking up at the thousands of parents, other family members and friends who were looking down at me.

Any place capable of holding 10,000 people qualifies as big. Seating capacity is only one of the coliseum's problems. Modern facilities need to be competitive with neighboring venues. right now John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville gets most of the top touring acts. They have built a facility with state dollars that serves the University of Virginia. We can do the same thing here. VCU actually has more students than UVA and we have a larger urban population that would be served by it. It is time for the Coliseum to be replaced or remodeled with a 1st class facility. There are many people in this town that expose expansion of any time connected with VCU, but VCU is the economic engine that is driving the growth of downtown. I think it is time we make that work to our advantage.
